Per ISA standards, it is safe to prune the vast majority of trees any time during the year.
For some trees and in certain circumstances, however, it is advisable to prune when the tree is dormant (during the winter months).
Often, fruit trees are pruned during the dormant season to enhance structure and distribute fruiting wood, and are pruned after bloom to thin fruit.
As a general practice, pruning fruit trees during the winter has certain advantages:
- The arborist can better see the tree structure.
- Minimize the risk of pest problems associated with wound entry
- Allow tree to take advantage of the full growing season
